OUR MISSION
Rambling Historian was born out of a love for exploring the history of Berwick-upon-Tweed and an aspiration to enthuse others about the vast array of historical sites across Northumberland. Our guided walks have a focus on storytelling, delving into the many layers of history buried within each ramble.
Whether you’re on holiday, taking a day trip, or even local, we know flexibility and variety are key. That’s why we’ve decided to keep our tours short and accessible, without the need to hop on and off a vehicle, so you can enhance your time in the area without letting our tour become your whole itinerary. For the hour or two that you’re with us, your guide will connect you to the heritage, history, and stories of the area, but from there the day is yours. With so much to do and see in Northumberland alone, we hope you’ll make a Rambling Historian tour a part of your Northumbrian experience.
MEET YOUR GUIDE
With much experience in the history and heritage sector, founder and lead guide, Alexander, is inspired to ignite the same passion he has for history in others. Having fallen in love with Northumberland he’s proud to take each walking tour around an area not just rich with local history, but also one he calls home.
Adamant historian that he is, Alexander divides his time between writing his first book on the history of the ancient Mediterranean, developing talks and content for future Rambling Historian endeavours, and being a dutiful husband…by talking to his wife about all of the above.
WHY RAMBLE?
History offers a variety of ways to immerse oneself in it, and so it felt only right to include that as part of our identity. For us, a ramble can mean a leisurely stroll through a historical site with a group of people excited to explore or an engaging discussion or dialogue through one of our upcoming talks (and hopefully a combination of both). By taking part in one of our guided tours or virtual talks you join a community of fellow ramblers aiding our vision to ignite a passion for the stories that the past holds on a larger scale, enabling anyone to become their own rambling historian.

Social Responsibility
Everyone who participates in our rambles is there for the same reason – to explore the past through its stories. With this in mind, we expect an atmosphere of mutual respect, tolerance, and consideration with regards to how those participating in a ramble conduct themselves and treat others around them. We also hold ourselves to a high standard in making sure everyone on a ramble is treated equitably.
Environmental Responsibility
Rambling Historian is founded out of a deep appreciation not only for history, but also a reverence for the natural world which provides the backdrop for many of our rambles. Our aim is to always consider how to minimize any impact on the environment. With that, we prioritize thinking locally when we can in an effort to decrease our carbon footprint and reduce physical impact.
